The Kumamoto Earthquake

CODE has endeavoured to provide full support to, and work together with our partner organisation, the NGO Collaboration Centre for Hanshin Quake Rehabilitation. It is our mission to transmit the latest information about the Kumamoto earthquake to the world, and we would like you to spread the information in your country.

According to our correspondent, approximately 2,000 vehicles have been parked in a car park in Mashiki-machi, where almost 6,000 people have been spending many nights away from home since the earthquake. The main reason is that they fear aftershocks. While some claimed that they would be unable to sleep in emergency shelters, others were concerned about their infant’s crying in the shelter. Consequently, many people have now begun to suffer Economy Class Syndrome, and some of them were reported to have died because of this.

The Center has been giving out the information about Economy Class Syndrome with local volunteers, as well as organising shelters and providing makeshift tents.

Your understanding and assistance are very much appreciated.
